Dauphin County sits in a severe-thunderstorm corridor and takes hail on a regular basis. Hail rarely punches through — it knocks the granules off and bruises the mat underneath, which you cannot see from the ground. That spot then ages several times faster than the shingle around it.

It is not how cold it gets here — it is how often we cross freezing. Water works into a hairline crack, expands about nine percent as it freezes, and reopens the gap slightly wider. Do that dozens of times a winter and a sound detail in October is an opening by March.

Wind breaks the seal. Hail strips the granules that protect the asphalt from ultraviolet light. Freeze-thaw widens whatever opening the first two left behind. A roof that would last thirty years in a mild climate gives you considerably less here unless it was built for it — full ice and water shield past the interior wall line, a six-nail high-wind pattern, and intake ventilation that actually feeds the ridge vent. That is the specification we install to as standard, and it is the first thing we check on any roof somebody else installed.
Honest pricing
Most roofing companies will not put a number on a website. That is how homeowners end up unable to tell a fair quote from a bad one. These are the published ranges for this market — not our quote, but the ballpark your quote should land in.
A roof is rarely a planned expense, so financing is available on replacements. What should never happen: paying the full project cost up front. A reasonable deposit with the balance tied to milestones is the standard, and a contractor who asks otherwise is telling you something about their cash position. Booking late September through mid-November usually costs less too — shingles seal properly in that band and crews are past the summer rush.

Four factors account for most of the spread between two quotes on the same house.
Roofing is priced by the square — 100 square feet. A steeper pitch is more area than the footprint suggests and needs staging, so it costs more to install at the same square footage.

Storm damage
After a Harrisburg storm, what happens in the next two days decides whether a small repair stays small — and whether your insurer treats the damage as a storm loss or as wear and tear.
Dated photos and video of the roof, the exterior, the soft metals and every interior stain — before tarping, before cleanup. Evidence you did not capture does not exist as far as a claim is concerned.

For most homes an architectural asphalt shingle installed to spec is the right answer, and in a hail county like ours a Class 4 impact-rated product is worth pricing because many carriers discount for it. It is a self-adhering waterproof membrane installed along the eaves, in the valleys and around every penetration, underneath the shingles. In Central Pennsylvania it is the single most important detail on the roof: when an ice dam forms and water backs up under the shingle courses, the shield is what stands between that water and your ceiling. We run it well past the interior wall line on every roof we replace, and it is the line cheap quotes cut first.
