Central Pennsylvania puts a specific set of stresses on asphalt. These are the failures we are called out for most.
Wind coming up the valley catches the rake edge first. Without a starter strip turned the right way, the first course has nothing holding its leading edge and peels back in a single event.
Hail knocks granules loose and bruises the mat underneath. The bruise is often invisible from the ground and only shows as accelerated aging two or three years later.
Humid Harrisburg summers plus a sealed-up attic equals blisters that pop and expose the mat. This is a ventilation failure showing up as a shingle failure.
Water in a hairline crack expands as it freezes and reopens the crack a little wider. Four months of cycling turns a hairline into a hole.
Fasteners driven into wet or unseasoned sheathing back out as the deck dries and moves, lifting the shingle above and creating a direct path to the deck.

For most homes in Colonial Park, Paxtonia and Lower Paxton Township, an architectural laminate is the correct specification. It looks right on a 1960s ranch or a 1990s colonial, it is repairable, and the price is defensible.

More practically, an attic that cannot exhaust heat in July cooks the adhesive out of the shingle from below, and an attic that cannot exhaust moisture in January grows frost on the sheathing that melts into your insulation.
