Olde Uptown is a designated historic district, and it looks it. The blocks between Third and Sixth north of Midtown hold some of the best-preserved late-Victorian rowhome architecture in Harrisburg — pressed metal cornices, decorative brickwork, original slate, and a level of intact detail that has survived a century and a half.
Working here means working to preservation standards. That is not a marketing position; it is a practical requirement, because exterior work visible from the street may be subject to review and because the neighbors will notice.
The Olde Uptown roof is a Victorian rowhome roof at its most detailed: a steep front slope, frequently slate, sometimes with a mansard face or decorative banding; an ornamental cornice with a built-in or hung gutter; and a low-slope rear section over the main body of the house.
The failures are the same as anywhere in the city — nail sickness in the slate, failed cornice gutters, aging membranes on the flat — but the acceptable repairs are narrower. A shingle patch on a slate front elevation is visible and, in a district, potentially a problem. Aluminum wrapping over a pressed metal cornice destroys the detail permanently.
So we work the way preservation practice requires: retain original material where it is sound, replace in kind where it is not, harvest matching slate from hidden slopes for visible repairs, and use copper rather than aluminum where flashing shows.
