Metal is the best-performing residential roof you can put on a house in Central Pennsylvania, and it is not close. It sheds snow rather than holding a saturated blanket over your eaves. It does not bruise the way an asphalt mat does when hail comes through. It does not lose granules, curl, or blister in a humid July attic.
The catch is cost and craft. A standing seam roof costs meaningfully more up front than architectural shingles, and it is a metalworking trade — panels have to be cut, hemmed, and detailed on site. Done well it is a fifty-year roof. Done badly it is an expensive leak with beautiful lines.
We install concealed-fastener systems almost exclusively. Exposed-fastener panels are cheaper and fine on a pole barn, but every one of those thousands of screws has a neoprene washer that will need replacing long before the metal does.
Metal is not automatically the answer for every house. These are the situations where we actively recommend it.
A slick metal surface sheds snow before it can melt-freeze into a dam at the eave. If you have paid for ice dam removal more than once, metal changes the equation permanently.
Homes on the higher ground around Skyline View, Linglestown and West Hanover Township take gusts that peel shingles. Locked seams do not lift the way a shingle tab does.
If getting on your roof requires staging, the labour cost of every future repair is high. A fifty-year roof avoids two of those cycles.
Metal dents in severe hail but it does not lose its waterproofing the way a bruised asphalt mat does. Many carriers rate it favorably.
Mechanically seamed metal works down to very low pitches where shingles cannot go, letting a porch or addition match the main roof.

Metal sheds snow in slabs. We lay out guards or rails against your pitch, panel length and whatever the roof discharges over — a front walk, a gas meter, a rear deck. Any metal quote that does not mention snow retention has not looked at your house.
Metal telegraphs every hump and dip in the sheathing. Deck preparation matters more under a standing seam roof than under shingles, so we plane or shim where we have to rather than laying a fifty-year roof over a wavy surface.
Panels expand and contract with temperature. Clip spacing is set for the wind zone and tightened at eaves, rakes and corners, and the assembly is left free to move — a roof pinned at both ends oil-cans or tears its own fasteners out.
Honest pricing
Installed metal in this market generally runs in the range of about $6.15 to $16.85 per square foot — an enormous spread, because an exposed-fastener barn panel and a mechanically seamed 24-gauge Kynar roof are barely the same product. 26-gauge snap-lock is the value option. 24-gauge mechanically seamed is the premium one and it is worth it on low slopes and exposed sites.
Kynar 500 / PVDF finishes hold color far longer than polyester finishes and carry longer fade warranties.
Metal loves long simple runs. Hips, valleys, dormers and skylights all require hand-formed flashing and add hours.
Guards or rails are priced per linear foot of protected eave and are genuinely necessary on most Harrisburg roofs.
Panels highlight deck irregularities, so an old wavy deck may need more prep than it would under shingles.
