Housing here runs from nineteenth-century river-town buildings through early and mid twentieth century singles and twins, with postwar development on the borough's outer edges.

The older core has the features that come with age: steep pitches, masonry chimneys, original wood cornices, and roofs that have been replaced two or three times with whatever was standard at the time. Layers, chimneys and honest tear-offs

The most common surprise on a New Cumberland re-roof is the second layer. Plenty of these houses had a layover done in the 1980s or 90s, and it roughly doubles tear-off labor and disposal weight compared with a single-layer roof.
