Gutters are the least glamorous part of a roof and the one that causes the most collateral damage when it fails. Water that should be leaving the eave instead runs behind the fascia, rots the sub-fascia and the first course of sheathing, freezes into the ice dam at the eave, and drops straight against a foundation that was never designed to take it.
Harrisburg makes this worse than most places. Our older neighborhoods are heavily shaded by mature street trees, so gutters load up with maple seeds in May and leaves in October. Our winters cycle above and below freezing constantly, so any gutter holding standing water becomes a block of ice hanging off the fascia.
We install seamless aluminum formed on site, hung on hidden hangers screwed into solid wood, and pitched so the trough drains completely. And we size downspouts to the actual roof area feeding them, which the previous installer usually did not.
Most gutter damage shows up somewhere other than the gutter.
Either the trough is undersized for the roof area, the downspouts cannot move the volume, or the gutter has pulled away from the fascia and lost its pitch.
Water running behind the gutter is soaking the wood it is attached to. That is how gutters end up on the lawn after a storm — the fascia let go, not the hanger.

Downspouts that discharge at the wall put hundreds of gallons against your foundation in a single storm. Extensions and splash blocks are the cheapest waterproofing there is.
Old spike-and-ferrule gutters loosen with every freeze cycle. Hidden hangers with screws do not.
If a seedling has taken root up there, the gutter has been full for at least a season and the fascia behind it is likely already compromised.
A standard 5-inch K-style gutter with 2x3 downspouts is the default on most American houses, and it is genuinely undersized for a steep roof with a large drainage area in a region that gets intense summer thunderstorms.
We calculate the roof area draining to each run, factor the pitch — steeper roofs deliver water faster — and size accordingly. In practice that means 6-inch trough with 3x4 downspouts on a lot of Harrisburg homes with steep Victorian roofs or large single-plane slopes. A 3x4 downspout moves substantially more water than a 2x3, and it clogs far less readily with the maple seed load our older neighborhoods produce.
Most gutter guards are sold on the promise that you will never clean gutters again. That promise is only true in a yard with no trees.
In Harrisburg's tree-lined blocks, the failure mode is not leaves — it is maple seeds, shingle grit and pine needles, which pass through or bridge over coarse screens and mesh. We install fine micro-mesh guards where the tree load justifies them and we tell homeowners plainly that any guard reduces cleaning frequency rather than eliminating it.

Gutters hang on wood. If the sub-fascia is rotted behind the old gutter, it gets replaced before anything new goes up — otherwise the new gutter fails the same way.
Roof area, pitch and existing downspout locations determine trough size, downspout count and where the outlets go.

Hidden hangers screwed into solid wood roughly every two feet, with a deliberate pitch toward each outlet so the trough drains dry.

Gutter work is priced primarily by linear foot, with adders for height, material and fascia repair. A single-story ranch in Colonial Park is a straightforward day; a three-story Victorian in Midtown with copper half-round is a very different project.
If a gutter quote does not mention fascia condition, the estimator did not look. Ask. It is the single most common hidden cost on this type of job.
Height drives staging and labour. Third-story runs over a rowhome stoop are slower and more hazardous than a ranch eave.
6-inch aluminum costs more than 5-inch. Copper is in a different bracket entirely.
Rotted wood behind an old gutter is common and it must be fixed first. We quote it separately and show you the damage.
More outlets means better drainage. Routing around porches, bays and utility meters adds elbows and labour.
Priced per linear foot and worth it selectively — under heavy tree cover, not on an open lot.

Twice a year is the baseline — late spring after the maple seeds drop and late autumn once the trees are bare. On heavily shaded blocks in Riverside and Bellevue Park, three times is more realistic.
We clear gutters as part of any roofing or gutter job, and we clear them on maintenance visits for commercial clients. We do not run a standalone residential gutter-cleaning route — plenty of local outfits do that well and cheaply, and sending a roofing crew to do it would cost you more than it should.
